Burke Centre VRE Station Parking Garage Groundbreaking to Be Held July 29
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors invites area residents to a groundbreaking ceremony for the Burke Centre Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Station Parking Garage on Saturday, July 29, at 1 p.m. The site is located at 5671 Roberts Parkway in Burke.
“Burke commuters are looking forward to the increased parking capacity this garage will offer,” said Braddock District Supervisor Sharon Bulova. “The community has been involved in the garage design process, and I’m happy that we’re ready to get started on the construction phase. It’s going to be a beautiful facility where the community can connect to the region’s transportation network through VRE.”
The Burke Centre VRE Parking Garage is part of the Board of Supervisors’ Four-Year Transportation Plan. The design was a coordinated effort among the federal government, Fairfax County, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), VRE, the local Burke Centre community and commuters.
“As the demand for transportation alternatives continues to grow, we are pleased that more commuters will be accommodated at the Burke Centre VRE Station,” said Department of Transportation Director Kathy Ichter.
The facility will have approximately 1,290 garage spaces and 250 surface spaces, with a designated bus loop, kiss-and-ride drop-off area, bus shelters, elevators and stairways, a covered walkway to the train platform, and pedestrian and accessible amenities. The architecture will include brick facades, decorative planters and a clock tower. The facility is expected to open in the spring of 2008.
The Burke Centre VRE Station currently is served by Metrobus and EZ Bus, which will continue to operate during construction. Additionally, offsite parking will be available, with shuttle service, at the future Burke Centre Library site (Fairfax County Parkway at Freds Oak Road). Information on the construction project will be posted on the VRE Web site at www.vre.org, and on the Fairfax County Department of Transportation Web page at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot.
For the parking garage groundbreaking, EZ Bus will be on hand from noon to 3 p.m. to shuttle people from the earlier Burke Centre Library groundbreaking event, which takes place at 11 a.m. The parking garage ceremony will be held rain or shine and will include light refreshments.
