Consumer Protection Division Receives ACE Award
The Consumer Protection Division of the Fairfax County Department of Cable Communications and Consumer Protection has received the Achievement in Consumer Education award from the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators.
NACAA, which represents more than 160 consumer agencies, recognized the Consumer Protection Division for the education programs and outreach activities conducted between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2005. The award is in recognition of the outstanding programs the division offered consumers through seminars, radio, cable programming, news articles and educational programs on topics such as utility regulation, identity theft, consumer rights and tenant/landlord matters.
The award was open to government, nonprofits, educational institutions, private sector companies, news organizations and international agencies. The division’s educational programs were judged based on the effectiveness of the messages presented to consumers ranging from high school students to seniors; the creativity and usefulness of the information shared with consumers; the value of the outreach activities to the community; and the division’s advocacy for consumer rights.
During 2005, the 19 members of the Consumer Protection Division conducted or participated in more than 110 outreach events and presentations including Consumer Protection Week; Board of Supervisors’ town meetings; fairs and festivals; radio and television shows; and appearances at schools, rotary clubs and homeowners associations. For the first time, Consumer Protection Division staff gave presentations to classes in all 29 Fairfax County public high schools and strongly supported the Life Smarts Program, a consumer knowledge competition designed for teenagers in grades 9 through 12, at the local and state level. The division also further extended its outreach to residents by establishing regular office hours at the South County Government Center.
