End of Car Tax Subsidy for
Delinquent Tax Years 2005 and Prior

Residents who were still delinquent on their car tax bills for tax year 2005 and prior are now required to pay 100 percent of the full outstanding balances. Previously, vehicle owners only paid taxes on 30 percent of the value on qualifying vehicles. However, because of state changes in the car tax program, residents who were still delinquent as of Sept. 1, 2006, are now responsible for 100 percent of the total tax due. State car tax subsidies for unpaid prior years have now expired.

The Personal Property Tax Relief Act (Car Tax) of 1998 provides tax relief on personal property tax on the first $20,000 of value for qualifying vehicles. The relief applies to any passenger car, motorcycle, pickup or panel truck having a registered gross weight of less than 7,501 pounds. The vehicle must be owned or leased by an individual and not used for business purposes.
