Braddock District to Host Tax Relief Workshop
for Seniors Oct. 20
Braddock District seniors are invited to attend a workshop on Friday, Oct. 20, hosted by Supervisor Sharon Bulova, on how to apply for real estate tax relief at Braddock Hall, 9002 Burke Lake Road, Burke. Desi Baltimore and Paula Louers from the Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide individual assistance, on a walk-in basis, to eligible seniors who wish to apply for tax relief.
In order for staff to accurately determine eligibility and assist in the application process, workshop attendees are asked to bring all financial documents related to their income and assets as of Dec. 31, 2005, to include the following:
- Tax return for 2005
- Bank statement ending Dec. 31, 2005
- Current bank statement
- Current financial portfolio
- Proof of retirement pension, if applicable
Fairfax County provides real estate tax relief to residents 65 years of age or older or who have permanent and total disabilities. For those who meet the age or disability qualification, the maximum asset eligibility requirement for the Real Estate Tax Relief Program for Seniors and People with Disabilities is $340,000 (not including the value of the house itself), while the maximum income limit is $72,000.
The deadline for filing for 2005 tax relief has been extended until Dec. 31 for new applicants and in cases of hardship. Residents who have been approved for tax relief for 2005 should not reapply for 2006 ? documents will be automatically mailed to them.
