Transit-Oriented Development Committee to
Discuss Recommendations at Final Meeting on Nov. 15
The Fairfax County Planning Commission’s Transit-Oriented Development Committee will hold its final meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, Rooms 2/3, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The committee has been working since May to refine principles for transit-oriented development in Fairfax County. Currently, a draft of those principles is available on the county’s Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/planning/tod.htm. A revised draft will be provided online on Monday, Nov. 13.
The draft plan includes principles related to transit proximity; pedestrian and bicycle access; station-specific flexibility; mix of land uses; housing affordability; design, parking, transportation and traffic; vision for the community; regional framework; environmental benefits; economic benefits; open space; infrastructure; phasing; and process and implementation.
The committee will aim to provide recommendations to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors later this year. The public has participated in the meetings by listening to presentations and discussions, giving presentations, asking questions and providing comments. The committee has evaluated the variety of information it received and will work toward developing a recommendation for an amendment to the Policy Plan volume of the Comprehensive Plan, which guides all development in Fairfax County. Any proposed amendments will then be examined by the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors, with public hearings scheduled before both groups.
