County Trails Focus of Board of Supervisors’ Action

The Board of Supervisors at its meeting today moved forward three Fairfax County trail projects.

“In an urban county such as Fairfax County, it is important not only to protect our natural environment, but to give our residents enhanced access to some of the county’s most scenic areas,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly. “These projects also will expand and improve the county’s 40-mile Cross County Trail network, of which I am so proud, that opened last December.”

The trail projects are:

  • Construction of the Holmes Run Stream Valley Trail between Columbia Pike and the City of Alexandria. This segment will connect Fairfax County’s trail system with Alexandria’s existing trail system. The trail enters the City of Alexandria in Glen Hills Park, a Fairfax County Park Authority facility.
  • Improving the connection from Danbury Forest Drive to the Cross County Trail in Lake Accotink Park. The improvements include constructing an asphalt and boardwalk trail with one pedestrian bridge.
  • Initiating construction for segment two of the Mason Neck Trail with additional funding from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Enhancement Funds to supplement the county’s contribution. Segment two extends from the first entrance to Pohick Regional Park to west of the entrance to Gunston Hall Plantation. Segment three of the trail, which extends from just west of the entrance to Gunston Hall Plantation to the entrance for Mason Neck Park, is complete. Segment one is slated for future construction.
