Mount Vernon District Hosts 20th Annual Town Meeting

 Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland will host Mount Vernon’s 20th Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (exhibits open at 7:45 a.m.) at Mount Vernon High School’s Little Theatre, 8515 Old Mount Vernon Road, Alexandria.

Topics on the agenda include county priorities; challenges and opportunities for Fairfax County; an overview of the fiscal year 2008 budget; transportation plans; base realignment and closure updates; school successes and challenges; public safety; and a virtual bus tour with Hyland.

Those scheduled to speak include Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly, Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman, County Executive Anthony H. Griffin, and Fairfax County School Superintendent Jack Dale.

Other panelists include Col. Brian Lauritzen, Fort Belvoir’s garrison commander; Fairfax County Deputy County Executive Ed Long; Fairfax County Police Chief David Rohrer; Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Daryl Louder; and Mount Vernon School Board member Daniel Storck.

Panelists will make their presentations followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer period. At the conclusion of the presentations, additional time will be allowed so residents have a chance to voice opinions or ask questions.

Fairfax County agencies, including the Office of Public Affairs, the Department of Family Services, the Park Authority, the Police Department, the Fire and Rescue Department, Animal Control, the Department of Tax Administration and the Division of Stormwater Management, will have representatives available to answer questions. The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation, George Mason University and Volunteer Fairfax are some of the noncounty agencies that also will be represented.
