Free Tree Seedlings Available for Spring Planting

Now is the time to request free tree seedlings from Fairfax ReLeaf for planting this spring on public areas throughout the county.  The goal this year is to plant 2007 tree seedlings on common areas at schools, religious institutions, homeowners association common grounds, parks, stormwater areas and on Virginia Department of Transportation rights of way.  The tree seedlings are not for planting on private residential property unless by a streambed for a riparian stream buffer.

To apply for the seedlings go to the Fairfax ReLeaf Web site at www.fairfaxreleaf.org, send an e-mail to trees@fairfaxreleaf.org or call 703-324-1409, TTY 711.

Fairfax ReLeaf, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and Fairfax County Stormwater Management Division of the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services have teamed up again to provide the free tree seedlings. Permission is needed to plant on most public areas and Fairfax ReLeaf will assist residents in applying for permission.  Homeowners associations may be contacted about planting on association common grounds.

This is an excellent project for youth groups, businesses, religious organizations, garden clubs or individuals.  Trees offset air pollution, manage and purify stormwater, store carbon from the atmosphere and provide cooling shade for buildings and pavement.

Fairfax ReLeaf will have three distribution points throughout the county.  The 1- to 3- foot seedlings will be distributed during March.

Information on how to plant the tree seedlings plus the guards and stakes will be provided with the seedlings. These seedlings should be planted soon after they are picked up and before the first of May.  Seedlings will arrive with bare roots and they will need to be kept in a dark cool place with their roots moist until planted.

Site leader training for those who qualify for seedlings will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24. For information go to www.fairfaxreleaf.org or call 703-324-1409, TTY 711.

Editor’s note:   These tree seedlings are only for planting on public land, not for planting on private residential property unless by a streambed for a riparian stream buffer.
