 2007 Friends of Trees Nominations Sought by March 31

The Fairfax County Tree Commission is seeking nominations for its 2007 Friends of Trees Awards by March 31. The award is presented to those individuals, schools, youth and adult organizations, civic organizations and other organizations that have volunteered their time and effort to preserve, protect or plant trees.

Project or program areas for nominations:

  • Tree preservation actions – conservation advocacy, land or easement donations or appropriate tree care.
  • Educational and outreach programs – publications, presentations and or interpretive services to the public regarding preservation, protection and planting of trees.
  • Tree planting projects – seedling planting, riparian restoration plantings, heritage species planting, etc.
  • Innovative maintenance programs – how to share the responsibility for long-term maintenance without traditional funding sources.

Individual nominations:

  • An Outstanding Individual Friends of Trees Award may be given to individuals who display superior tree preservation and/or planting actions and leadership.

Nomination forms may be obtained by calling Urban Forest Management at 703-324-1770, TTY 711 or by e-mailing jessica.strother@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Nomination guidelines include:

  • Applicants must submit a written description of their project or program, its location, the planning involved, how problems were addressed and the results.
  • Applicants should submit photographs or materials to illustrate the project.
  • Project must have been completed in calendar year 2006 or, if a continuing project, have been started in 2006 and have an anticipated life of more than one year.
  • Please limit applications to the form and a maximum of five additional pages, including photographs and illustrations (seven pages total).
  • Mail completed forms to: Urban Forest Management, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 518, Fairfax, VA 22035-5503 by Saturday, March 31.

The awards will be presented to the recipients on Saturday, April 28, at the annual Fairfax County Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration.

The Fairfax County Tree Commission is a 15-member board appointed by the Board of Supervisors. Ten citizen members are nominated by the Board of Supervisors and one member each from the Fairfax County Environmental Quality Advisory Council; Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District; Fairfax County Park Authority; Virginia Cooperative Extension and Continuing Education; and Virginia Department of Forestry. The commission provides leadership in developing an understanding of the objectives and methods of tree conservation and assists Urban Forest Management in the development and maintenance of technical specifications and guidelines.
