Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Appoints Ronald Mastin New Fire Chief
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors today appointed Ronald L. Mastin as chief of the Fire and Rescue Department, effective June 3. Mastin, a 34-year fire and rescue veteran, is currently the fire chief in Henrico County. He succeeds Michael Neuhard, who left Fairfax County on Feb. 2 to become deputy county administrator of Stafford County.
As chief,
Mastin will plan, coordinate and direct the overall operation of the Fire
and Rescue Department, including fire suppression and prevention,
emergency medical services, technical rescue and water rescue operations,
hazardous materials abatement, life safety education and arson

approximately 1,350 uniformed firefighters, 130 civilians and 325
operational volunteers.
Mastin has served as Henrico County fire chief since 2001 and he served in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department from 1973 to 2001, including time as deputy fire chief. He is the chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association and a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Metro Section. Mastin also is a member of the Southeastern Fire Chiefs Association and vice president of the Metro Richmond Fire Chiefs Association.
Mastin earned a Bachelor of Science in fire administration and management from the University of Maryland and an Associate in Applied Science in fire administration from Northern Virginia Community College.
