TaxiAccess Offers New Transportation Service
for Fairfax County Residents With Disabilities
A new transportation service, TaxiAccess, will be available to Fairfax County residents with disabilities through a pilot program that begins May 1. TaxiAccess will provide subsidized taxicab service to county residents who are currently registered users of MetroAccess, a transportation service provided by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
TaxiAccess will resemble Seniors On-The-Go!, a popular taxicab program that has been providing discounted rides for Fairfax County’s older residents since 2001. TaxiAccess initially will be implemented as a pilot program and has been funded for one year. Users will be able to purchase up to eight coupon booklets per year for $10 each, which is one-third the regular cost of $30 per booklet. Like Seniors On-The-Go!, this new program will be managed by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation.
Participation in TaxiAccess will be reserved exclusively for Fairfax County residents who have completed the registration process with MetroAccess and can be found on the active roster of county MetroAccess users. It was created in order to provide more transportation choices for Fairfax County residents with disabilities. Initially, applications only will be available by calling the Fairfax County Department of Transportation at 703-324-1172, TTY 711, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Eventually, TaxiAccess applications will be available throughout Fairfax County at various government facilities. The application and additional information about the program soon also will be available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot/taxiaccess.htm.
MetroAccess, is the federally mandated curb-to-curb shared-ride public transportation service sponsored by WMATA and its member jurisdictions in the Washington Metropolitan Area (including Fairfax County). This service, created under the Americans With Disabilities Act, requires that public transportation services provide accessible transportation, or what is more commonly known as “paratransit” service, for people with disabilities who are unable to access bus and rail service such as Metrorail, Metrobus or the Fairfax Connector.
For additional information about qualifying for ridership privileges with MetroAccess, contact the Office of MetroAccess by phone at 301-562-5360 (press option #4), TTY 301-588-7535; by e-mail at email@example.com; or by mail to 8405 Colesville Road, Suite 400, Silver Spring, MD, 20910-6341. Further information about MetroAccess is available at www.wmata.com/metroaccess.
