Sixth Annual Springfield Community BridgeWalk
Springfield families, county and community groups, local businesses, and all those who have ever wondered what it would be like to walk across the Amherst Avenue Bridge on a late summer night are invited to participate in the sixth annual Springfield Community BridgeWalk, sponsored by the Lee District Supervisor’s Office, on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Starting at 7 p.m., participants will gather in the parking lot adjacent to Kinko’s, 6998Bland Street on the north side of the bridge. Family dogs also are welcome to join the crowd.
At 7:30 p.m., participants will march across the bridge, led by a color guard from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lake Accotink Park Precision Golf Cart Brigade. The bridge will be closed to traffic during this time. The walk will end in the parking lot of the American Legion Post 176 where there will be music by the Kings Park Concert Band and light refreshments. Door prizes, free commemorative gifts and bottles of bubbles for kids will be handed out. Scheduled speakers include Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly, Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman and Colonel Brian Lauritzen, garrison commander of Fort Belvoir.
The Amherst Avenue Bridge is a gateway to central Springfield. With its acorn lights, wide sidewalks, pedestrian stairway and attractive facade, it dovetails nicely with the community’s vision for a revitalized Springfield and is an attractive doorway to the central business district.
Sponsors of the event include Paradise Ice Cream Company, Baja Fresh, TAGS, Burger King, Talk of the Town Gourmet Gifts, Try Change, Springfield Plaza EmbroidMe, American Legion Post 176, the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the Fairfax County Park Authority.
