Planning Commission’s Environment Committee
Will Hold Green Buildings Workshop Sept. 6
The Fairfax County Planning Commission’s Environment Committee will hold a public workshop on developing an approach to use the Comprehensive Plan to encourage implementation of green building practices for private sector development. The workshop will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Board Auditorium, Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The workshop also will be televised live on Fairfax County Government Channel 16.
The workshop continues the work of the commission’s Environment Committee, which has held several public meetings on this topic. The committee began work in January 2007 to strengthen Comprehensive Plan guidance regarding air quality issues and incorporate support for green building practices into the Comprehensive Plan. The public participated in these meetings by listening and giving presentations, participating in the discussions, asking questions and providing written comments. In June, the committee recommended advertisement of public hearings for a proposed plan amendment, recognizing that the process should be flexible to accommodate further analysis and related revisions. Public hearings on the proposed plan amendment will be held before the Planning Commission in November and before the Board of Supervisors in December.
As a starting point for discussion, a “straw-man” will be presented at the workshop based upon information, issues and concerns raised at Environment Committee meetings. This straw-man and other information pertinent to the workshop may be viewed on the Planning Commission’s Web page at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/planning.
