Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day Symposium on Oct. 10

In recognition of Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day on Oct. 10, the Fairfax County Domestic Violence Awareness Month Planning Committee and the Virginia Department of Health’s Project RADAR will co-sponsor a symposium on improving the health care community’s response to intimate partner violence.

The symposium will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Fairfax County Government Center Board Auditorium and Conference Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The free event is open to health care providers, allied professionals and the general public, but registration is required. The deadline for registration is Oct. 3.

The featured keynote speaker is Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell, the Anna D. Wolf chair in nursing at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and an internationally recognized expert on intimate partner violence. She will examine lethality risk factors for domestic violence victims through the use of her validated “danger assessment” instrument.

The event also features break-out sessions on screening and assessing for domestic violence in clinical settings; responding to the needs of victims with traumatic brain injuries; and an overview of the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Women and Children’s Forensic Nurse Intimate Partner Violence Program and the Tahirih Justice Center’s pro bono medical network.

For more information about the program and registration forms, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dsm/ or contact Seema Zeya, domestic violence coordinator for Fairfax County, at seema.zeya@fairfaxcounty.gov or 703-324-7472, TTY 711.

Project RADAR is an initiative of the Division of Injury and Violence Prevention at the Virginia Department of Health.
