Lawrence V. Fowler Award Honors Peter F. Murphy Jr.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors presented the Lawrence V. Fowler Award to Peter F. Murphy Jr. at its meeting today. The award recognizes distinguished service of a longstanding member of a Fairfax County Board, Authority, Commission or Committee (BAC) whose exceptional service contributed to the overall quality of life in the community.

Pete Murphy

Chosen from a number of nominations of distinguished members of BACs who are committed to public service, Murphy has been a member of the Planning Commission for 24 years and served as chairman for 18. He was recognized for his selfless and exemplary dedication of time and energy, which has contributed to the overall quality of life in the community. His distinguished service on the Planning Commission was demonstrated through his commitment to the planning process and providing a forum for residents to articulate and achieve a vision of how they want their community to look and function in the future.

During his leadership, he oversaw advances in environmental protection, affordable housing, proffers to offset impacts on public facilities and the adoption of the county’s Policy Plan for future development. Significant revisions to the Policy Plan during the years facilitated success in revitalization, environmental sustainability and residential use development guidelines, which will benefit not only present, but also future, residents of Fairfax County.

In addition to his Planning Commission duties, Murphy became involved with Celebrate Fairfax! early in its 26-year history. He played a major role in developing the vision that made the Celebrate Fairfax! Festival the largest annual community celebration in Northern Virginia and continues in a leadership role.

Murphy’s diligence, commitment, sense of humor, and many tireless years of serving on numerous committees and task forces have earned him the respect and admiration from the public, county staff, fellow commissioners and members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

This prestigious Lawrence V. Fowler Award was established to honor the accomplishments of Fowler, who served for 41 years on the Consumer Protection Commission and its predecessor. He set the bar for exceptional and long-term volunteer service for Fairfax County government. His actions had a major effect on the quality of life of the community through his work with consumer issues. To be considered for the award, individuals must have served on a county BAC for at least 10 years demonstrating exceptional service contributing to the overall quality of life in the community.
