Fairfax County Opens Emergency Shelter At Mt. Vernon RECenter

In response to heavy rain and localized flooding, Fairfax County has opened an emergency shelter as a precautionary measure at the Mt. Vernon RECenter, 2017 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria (telephone: 703-768-3224).

If residents are experiencing flooding, they should seek higher ground or go to the shelter. Residents may drive to the location and enter the building through the front entrance. Transportation is also available; if needed, check in with public safety officials at the command post at the corner of Huntington Avenue and Farrington Avenue. Animals will also be accepted at the shelter.

Residents taking shelter at the Mt. Vernon RECenter should bring any prescription medications with them, as well as any needed food items, toiletries and toys/items for children.

The National Weather Service earlier this evening issued a flood warning for Fairfax County and the metropolitan region due to the potential for flooding. NWS reports that approximately 2 inches of rain has already fallen with the potential for another 1-2 inches expected overnight.

Fairfax County has partially activated its Alternate Emergency Operations Center at the Fairfax County Government Center to monitor and respond to this situation. Media can call staff at the AEOC at 703-502-6098, TTY 711, or 571-238-7437.

In addition, Fairfax County public safety personnel are in the Huntington area monitoring the situation and assisting residents as needed.

For more information, residents can call the Fairfax County Government Emergency Information Line at 703-817-7771, TTY 711, or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov.
