The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed Kenneth L. Saunders as director of the Office of Human Rights and Equity Programs. He will begin his new position on Sept. 2.
Presently, Saunders is the diversity and equal employment opportunity (EEO) officer for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. In that capacity, he resolves and handles all discrimination issues; keeps management apprised of new and changing EEO and employment laws; chairs the Women and Minorities Advisory Council and is the central point of contact for all diversity programs and initiatives.
Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Saunders served as the director of the Office for Human Rights for the District of Columbia, from 2003-2007; as the executive director of the Shreveport Human Relations Commission Non-Profit, Louisiana, from 2001-2003; and as the legal counsel and EEO officer for the Community Relations Commission, Columbus, Ohio, from 1998-2001.
Saunders is an attorney with more than 15 years of experience in diversity management and human rights. His legal experience also includes employment law, with an emphasis on regulations and standards, human resources, sexual harassment, compliance and other sensitive employment matters. He is a graduate of Wilberforce University and received his law degree from the Ohio State University College of Law.
Saunders will receive an annual salary of $123,500.
