Are You Eligible for Unclaimed Money?
Oct. 20, 2008
- Fairfax County works to return over $1 million of unclaimed property to its rightful owners each year.
- Residents and business owners can check their eligibility for these funds online.
Each year, the Fairfax County Department of Finance works to return more than $1 million of unclaimed property to its rightful owners. This unclaimed money may be the result of a check being returned to the county as undeliverable or a check that has not been cashed after a certain period of time.
Residents and business owners can check if they have unclaimed funds through a free online service.
Due diligence is exercised to locate the rightful owners of the unclaimed money and each year more than 80 percent of these funds are successfully reimbursed. If the Department of Finance is unsuccessful in finding the rightful owner, a report, along with the money, is submitted to the state of the owners' last known address. To find out if you are eligible for the funds submitted to the commonwealth of Virginia, visit www.vamoneysearch.org.
