For his efforts in Fairfax County to increase the number of minority voters participating in the electoral process, Hung Nguyen was honored by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors with the 2008 Barbara Varon Volunteer Award during their meeting on Oct. 20. The award, named in honor of the memory of Barbara Varon, former chairman of the Fairfax County Electoral Board, was established to recognize a Fairfax County resident’s dedication to improving the community through volunteer service.
Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee, has worked with minority communities to increase participation in the electoral process and awareness of civic responsibilities. He has organized efforts to provide translated election materials, including a Vietnamese American Rock and Vote Concert in 2002 at the Fairfax County Government Center. As a result, more Asian Americans are informed of issues and are voting in Fairfax County. Nguyen also serves on several government committees and nonprofit organizations, including the Governor's Commission for Community and Volunteerism and the Fairfax County Consumer Protection Commission.
Barbara Varon award nominees must reside in Fairfax County, demonstrate an appreciation for the diversity of the community's population, exhibit patriotism, show evidence of having a positive effect on the community and be known for encouraging others to do the same.
"Hung Nguyen exemplifies these attributes," said Equity Programs Division Director Martha Villanigro-Santiago. "His more than 12 years as an active volunteer with minority communities have served to make him a role model."
