Louise H. Rooney Receives 2009 Barbara Varon Volunteer Award
Oct. 19, 2009
For her service as a volunteer in the Fairfax County community, Louise H. Rooney received the 2009 Barbara Varon Volunteer Award at the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on Oct. 19. The award, which honors the memory of Barbara Varon, former chairman of the Fairfax County Electoral Board, was established to recognize a Fairfax County resident’s dedication to improving the community through volunteer service.
Rooney has served as a volunteer with many organizations that provide a variety of basic services to the community — the Herndon Fortnightly Club and Herndon Fortnightly Library; the Closet; a local ESL program; the Jeannie Schmidt Free Clinic; Reston Hospital; Herndon United Methodist Church; and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
As a member of the Herndon Fortnightly Club, Rooney has held several positions, including chaplain and president. She volunteers and is on the board of directors for The Closet, a nonprofit thrift shop in Herndon that sells donated clothing and household necessities and uses profits to support community programs; it also donates clothing.
Barbara Varon Volunteer Award nominees must reside in Fairfax County, demonstrate an appreciation for the diversity of the community’s population; exhibit patriotism; show evidence of having a positive effect on the community; and be known for encouraging others to do the same.
“Louise H. Rooney exemplifies these attributes,” said Fairfax County Equity Programs Division Director Martha Villanigro-Santiago. “Her many volunteer activities demonstrate her appreciation for community service and diversity.”
