8th Annual Springfield BridgeWalk Is Aug. 25
Aug. 10, 2009
Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay invites residents, businesses and other community members to participate in the 8th Annual Springfield Community BridgeWalk on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 7-9 p.m.
In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside the American Legion at 6520 Amherst Ave., Springfield.
Participants should gather in the parking lot adjacent to Kinko’s, 6998 Bland Street, on the north side of the bridge, starting at 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., participants will march across the bridge, led by a color guard from the American Legion and a contingent of soldiers from Fort Belvoir. The bridge will be closed to traffic during this time. The walk will end in the parking lot of the American Legion. Following the walk, festivities will include:
- Music by the Kings Park Concert Band.
- Free vision, glaucoma and blood pressure screenings provided by the Mason Neck and Springfield-Franconia Host Lions clubs.
- Free pet photos provided by Springfield Mall.
- Light refreshments and prizes from local businesses.
This year’s event will feature an Army Community Covenant signing. The covenant is an affirmation of support by state and local communities to active, guard and reserve service members and their families.
Veterans Bridge, also known as the Amherst Avenue Bridge, crosses Old Keene Mill Road and links both sides of Springfield’s commercial revitalization area. It was redesigned as part of the Springfield Mixing Bowl reconstruction and made pedestrian-friendly with wide sidewalks and attractive lighting.
