The Consumer Affairs Branch of the Fairfax County Department of Cable Communications and Consumer Protection has received the Achievement in Consumer Education (ACE) award from the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators (NACAA).
NACAA, which represents more than 160 consumer agencies, recognized the Consumer Affairs Branch for the timely and necessary outreach programs conducted in response to challenges posed by the foreclosure crisis. Consumer Affairs, in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV), planned, conducted and participated in foreclosure education events throughout the region, successfully reaching out to homeowners and renters.
At these events, homeowners were provided with tools to help them prevent or avoid foreclosure and renters were given information about their options when their rental home goes into foreclosure. Community members also were provided information on which agencies to contact when a neighborhood property has been abandoned or fallen into disrepair. Homeowners were educated on foreclosure rescue schemes and other predatory practices.
The award was open to government, nonprofits, educational institutions, private sector companies, news organizations and international agencies. The award was based on the effectiveness, timeliness and value of the information presented to homeowners and renters, and Consumer Affairs’ commitment to consumer education in unpredictable and challenging times.
Consumer Affairs remains engaged in the community and continues to conduct foreclosure information meetings in partnership with DHCD and LSNV to make sure homeowners or renters receive needed information, assistance and tools to make informed decisions about their home.
