Exceptional Design Awards Nominations Sought by June 24

Starting May 13, the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning will accept entries for the 25th annual Exceptional Design Awards. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on June 24. Nominations can be submitted online.
For the past 24 years, the Exceptional Design Awards Program has recognized achievement in the total design of a building and its site, and has raised awareness of outstanding planning and design projects among design professions and the general public.
Any project completed in Fairfax County since Jan. 1, 2003, is eligible to be nominated. Professionals and the general public are encouraged to participate. Detailed submission requirements can be found online.
The awards, judged by a jury, include honor awards, merit awards and honorable mentions. Nominations can be submitted in many categories including but not limited to residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and historical. All entries should meet some or all of the following criteria:
- Exemplifies a superior work of architecture.
- Incorporates total site design and landscaping.
- Takes into account the context of the work in relationship to its surroundings.
- Applies energy and water conservation and other green building practices.
The jury will be composed of representatives from the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Landscape Architects, Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, Fairfax County History Commission, American Planning Association, Engineers and Surveyors Institute and the Fairfax County Architectural Review Board.
Award recipients will be notified by July 24. The awards will be presented in the fall.
