Fairfax County has launched the first phase of a financial transparency Web page, that consolidates links from multiple agencies on one Web page.
“Financial transparency” describes efforts to make comprehensive, unfiltered information available to the public – providing a clear view of the government’s operations and how tax dollars are spent.
Currently, the Web page has links to information including:
- Financial reports.
- Budgets for projects and services.
- Annual audits.
- Procurement contracts.
- Staff compensation plans.
The commonwealth of Virginia has restrictions ( Code of Virginia 58.1-3131) on disclosure of information in the county’s check register (book of warrants).
Fairfax County plans to expand transparency efforts in the coming years. The county has embarked on a multi-year initiative to replace old budget and finance technologies, which will enable the county to provide an extensive, searchable financial database.
The Fairfax County Department of Finance is coordinating the financial transparency effort as part of its charge to protect and maintain the fiscal integrity and financial accountability of Fairfax County Government.
