The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors confirmed the Electoral Board’s appointment of Edgardo Cortés as general registrar, effective Aug. 17.
Fairfax County has more than 650,000 registered voters – more registered voters than nine states and the District of Columbia. As general registrar, Cortés will oversee Fairfax County’s large voter registration and election administration agency.
Cortés is currently deputy director for policy for the United States Election Assistance Commission in Washington, D.C. His duties include carrying out the commission’s responsibilities under the National Voter Registration Act, among them maintaining the federal voter registration form. He was previously grants director for the commission.
Cortés has extensive experience developing and supervising voter registration campaigns, in addition to creating national training programs. He served as the national director for voter registration with the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, where he managed more than 400 staff members who registered more than 330,000 voters in 14 states.
Cortés holds a master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in rural sociology from Cornell University.
Cortés will receive an annual salary of $108,000.
