African-American History Month
The Board of Supervisors will designate February as African-American
History Month in Fairfax County to celebrate the history, contributions,
concerns and achievements of African Americans.
Black Women United for Action
The Board of Supervisors will recognize Black Women United for Action
for its efforts to create positive change and educate the public about
the sacrifices and contributions made by those who were enslaved
Africans. Black Women United for Action joined with community
organizations and individuals to host the 25th Anniversary of the Slave
Memorial at historic Mount Vernon — the only known monument of its kind
in the nation.
Impacting the Lives of Youth
The Board of Supervisors will designate January as Mentoring Month in
Fairfax County. Mentoring is a proven, effective strategy that
matches a caring adult with a child to provide guidance and build
confidence, stability and direction. Residents of the county are urged to
volunteer as a mentor and promote awareness, involvement and support for
the mentoring of all youth.
Reston Hospital Center
The Board of Supervisors will recognize the Reston Hospital Center for
its standard of nursing excellence and community service. The Reston
Hospital Center achieved the American Nursing Credentialing Center Magnet
designation, an honor currently bestowed on only five percent of
hospitals.
Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day
The Board of Supervisors will designate Jan. 30 as Earned Income Tax
Credit Awareness Day in Fairfax County. From Jan. 24 through April
15, hundreds of volunteers at 16 sites in Northern Virginia will help
individuals and families who earned less than $42,000 in 2008 prepare
their federal and state income tax forms.
