David M. McKernan Appointed Fairfax County Emergency Management Coordinator

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors today appointed David M. McKernan, of Burke, Va., as Fairfax County emergency management coordinator and director of the county’s Office of Emergency Management. He will begin his new position on Oct. 12.
McKernan served in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for more than 30 years, retiring in February 2009, as deputy chief of operations. A career firefighter, he has held numerous positions with the department, including operations chief of the Fairfax County Enhanced Code Enforcement Strike Teams, deputy chief of fire prevention and battalion chief.
A nationally certified paramedic, McKernan is also certified by the commonwealth of Virginia as a fire prevention inspector and a state instructor for Incident Command System training courses. He is a member of the National Capital Region’s (NCR) All Hazard Incident Management Team, qualified as an incident commander, operations chief and planning section chief, and is chairman of the NCR Administrative and Policy Committee.
McKernan has received several awards during his career, including a unit citation award, lifesaving award from the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and a Hurricane Katrina Response Ribbon.
Currently enrolled in the George Mason University certificate program in emergency management and homeland security, McKernan holds a bachelor’s degree in fire science management from George Mason University and an associate degree in fire administration from Northern Virginia Community College. He will receive an annual salary of $132,000.
