Fairfax County to Receive Art Display Featuring Board of Supervisors Chairmen
Jan. 6, 2010
On Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 3:30 p.m., the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations will present to Fairfax County a specially commissioned artist’s display of black-and-white photos taken of all living Board of Supervisors chairmen under the current urban county executive form of government. The event will take place in the Conference Center at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.
The display, the work of photographer Diana Adams, consists of six candid black-and-white photos, beginning with Jean Packard through current chairman Sharon Bulova. The six chairmen featured will be:
- Jean Packard, 1972-1975
- Audrey Moore, 1988-1991
- Thomas M. Davis, 1992-1994
- Katherine Hanley, 1995-2003
- Gerald E. Connolly, 2004-2008
- Sharon Bulova, 2009-current
Photos of three chairmen who served under the urban county executive form of government but are not still living will be shown next to the artist's display. They are:
- Frederick A. Babson, Jr., 1966-1970
- William S. Hoofnagle, 1970-1972
- John F. (Jack) Herrity, 1976-1987
In addition, the Fairfax County History Commission will present a framed list of all chairmen serving from 1870 until present.
Fairfax County’s urban county executive form of government was established in the 1960s. The new form of government required more stringent ethical and disclosure requirements and called for the chairman of the Board of Supervisors to be elected countywide, or “at-large.”
