At its meeting today, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors declared May 9-15 as International Building Safety Week 2010 in Fairfax County. This week focuses public attention on the importance of the building code and the role of code enforcement professionals.
The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services also presented the Building Safety Community Partnership Award. This award was given to Henry Green, president of the National Institute of Building Sciences. This annual award recognizes individuals and organizations for their contributions to advancing building and construction safety in Fairfax County.
The county will celebrate the week along with five other Northern Virginia local governments: Arlington County; the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church; and the town of Herndon. This collaborative effort includes:

Monday, May 10, 11 a.m.: Free brunch and presentations, Herrity Building, 12055
Government Center Parkway, Rooms 106/107, Fairfax. Reservations are
required. Call the Department of Public Works and Environmental
Services’ Land Development Services
Division at 703-324-1910, TTY 711. “High Performance Buildings” and
“Natural Disasters and the Importance of Building Codes” are the topics
for the presentations. The speakers are Henry Green, National Institute
of Building Sciences, and Sean Kennedy, O’Donnell &
Nacacarat.

May 15-16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: County, city and town staff
will be at Home Depot stores to answer questions about building
permits, code requirements and safety in the home. Staff will be at
thefollowing four stores: 6201 Arlington Boulevard, Fairfax; 3201 Old
Lee Highway, Fairfax; 1651 Reston Parkway, Reston; and 400 South
Pickett Street, Alexandria.
- May 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The Herndon Housing Fair will offer the public information about property maintenance, building and zoning permits, home improvement and energy conservation.
