Since 1985, the Exceptional Design Awards Program has recognized achievement in the total design of a building and its site, and has raised awareness of outstanding planning and design projects among design professionals and the general public.

Any project completed in Fairfax County since Jan. 1, 2005, is eligible to be nominated. Industry professionals and the general public are encouraged to participate.

The awards, judged by a jury, include honor awards, merit awards and honorable mentions. Nominations can be submitted in many categories, including but not limited to residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and historical. Entries should meet some or all of the following criteria:

  • Exemplifies a superior work of architecture.
  • Incorporates total site design and landscaping.
  • Takes into account the context of the work in relationship to its surroundings.
  • Applies energy and water conservation and other green building practices.

The jury will be composed of representatives from the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Landscape Architects, Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, Fairfax County History Commission, American Planning Association, Engineers and Surveyors Institute and the Fairfax County Architectural Review Board.

Award recipients will be notified in early August. The awards will be presented in the fall.
