FY 2012 Budget Community Engagement Includes Do-it-Yourself Kit
Sept. 15, 2010
Fairfax County residents will have an opportunity to provide their input on the Fiscal Year 2012 Budget (which runs from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012) to county leaders in a variety of ways this year.
The county has scheduled two community forums; established an online do-it-yourself kit to host your own meetings; and created an online survey and feedback form.
The community forums are Oct. 5 and 23. They will include an overview of the budget, a facilitated discussion with Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and School Board Chairman Kathy Smith, and small-group workshops. Registration is required and can be completed online or by calling 703-324-2391, TTY 711.
The times and locations are:
- Tuesday, Oct. 5, 7-9 p.m., Fairfax County Government Center.
- Saturday, Oct. 23, 2-4 p.m., Hayfield Secondary School cafeteria.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 4, residents and community groups are encouraged to host their own meetings using the online Do-it-Yourself Budget Toolkit. The toolkit will include:
- A 15-minute video overview on the FY 2012 Budget.
- Background information to guide the discussion.
- Topic questions to be answered by the group.
- An online form to provide feedback to the county.
“These do-it-yourself discussions will allow residents, community groups and organizations to host individual group discussions about the budget,” says Bulova. “Participants will learn of the big picture, but can also choose to focus on the issues that matter most to them.”
Residents also can complete a short budget survey (beginning Oct. 4) and submit comments online if they are not able to attend a community forum.
The input gathered from the public will be used as a key factor to help guide the development of criteria for making budget decisions, providing the public with greater opportunity to help shape the budget before County Executive Anthony H. Griffin presents his proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors in February 2011. Residents will still have an opportunity to provide feedback in March and April to the board at the budget hearings as in previous years.
