Time to prepare for hurricane season, it starts June 1.
The National Hurricane Center will observe Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 23-29. More information and resources are online.
Save money during Virginia’s hurricane sales tax holiday, May 25-31. Stock up on items during hurricane and flooding season, and add items to the family emergency supply kit. Many everyday items such as batteries, bottled water, duct tape and first-aid kits – as well as portable generators and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radios – will be exempt from state sales tax.
Fairfax County has more information online about the sales tax holiday and hurricane preparedness. In addition, residents are encouraged to submit pictures of emergency preparedness items purchased during the sales tax holiday, as well as emergency supply kits, to a special county Flickr page.
For more on emergency preparedness, contact the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management at 571-350-1000, TTY 711.
