Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and Braddock District Supervisor John C. Cook invite the public to attend a ceremony and celebration of the rehabilitation of the Woodglen Lake dam on Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. The entrance to Woodglen Lake Park is located on Fireside Court in Fairfax. Parking is limited and attendees are encouraged to park on nearby streets.
Scheduled speakers include Bulova and Cook, as well as U.S. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly; regional conservationist (East) Leonard Jordan, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service; and vice chairman John Peterson, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District.
The four-month project will rehabilitate and strengthen the auxiliary spillway of the Woodglen Lake dam to ensure that the structure continues to provide flood protection for
435 residents and 157 homes and businesses, including residential property valued at $57 million.
The Woodglen Lake dam was critical during hurricane conditions in 2006, when it held back flood water that would have inundated the surrounding area and caused millions of dollars in damages.
Funding for the project includes $1.45 million through ARRA and an estimated $600,000 from Fairfax County. For more information about the ceremony or the rehabilitation project, contact the Braddock District Office at 703-425-9300, TTY 711.
