Apply for Building Permits Online
July 5, 2011
To make it faster and easier to get a building permit, homeowners and contractors may now apply online through the Fairfax Inspections Database Online or FIDO.
Customers won’t need to spend time waiting in line thanks to this new online application system, and the county will be able to issue more permits—and more quickly.
On the FIDO Web page, click on "Apply for a Permit” for the following types of building permits:
- Household Appliance
- Residential Electrical
- Residential Plumbing
- Finished Basement
Some applications for finished basements will still require a trip to the Permit Application Center to complete the process. However, many electrical and plumbing permits can even be issued online.
Starting this fall, it will be possible to apply for even more kinds of building permits online.
Payment is accepted using major credit cards and e-checks. There is a $3.95 processing fee for each transaction, but multiple permits can be paid for in one transaction.
To apply for a permit, you will need to create an online account which requires an e-mail address. If a contractor is completing the work, you also will need their FIDO-issued ID when applying online. Contractors must apply for their ID number in person at the Permit Application Center.
For questions or problems, please email the FIDO Administrator, or call 703-222-0801, TTY 711, on Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.
