Father's Day Celebration at West Ford Apartments

June 10, 2011

The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) will host a Father’s Day celebration at West Ford Apartments in the Mount Vernon District on Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. for the households at West Ford to celebrate the importance of fathers and father figures in the lives of children.

The FCRHA’s event is part of a nationwide effort sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for Public Housing Authorities to bring fathers and their children together to celebrate fatherhood and family, and connect the fathers to local programs and services.

The FCRHA is partnering with the Fairfax County Health Department, Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, the Department of Family Services Skillsource Center and several local nonprofits to bring activities and workshops to the residents of West Ford that encourage family interaction and will offer educational and life skills to fathers and father figures.

The keynote speaker will be Steve Schultze, Osbourn High School coach and former coach of NFL player Brandon Hogan (West Virginia University). Schultz will speak on the importance of positive male role models in the lives of children.

The Father’s Day event at West Ford is supported by the Department of Housing and Community Development’s new PROGRESS Center, (Partnership for Resident Opportunities, Growth, Resources and Economic Self-Sufficiency), an initiative developed to address obstacles to a household’s journey towards self-sufficiency.
