Tenth Annual Culmore Cleanup, Saturday, April 28

March 29, 2012

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Culmore Cleanup, an event targeted to rid streets of litter while bringing awareness to keeping the community clean. For the past decade, volunteers from the Culmore area, including local businesses, places of worship and nonprofit organizations have participated in this annual event. The 2012 Culmore Cleanup will be held Saturday, April 28, 9 a.m. to noon.

Participants should check in at 9 a.m. at the Woodrow Wilson Library, 6101 Knollwood Drive, Falls Church, to receive trash bags, a t-shirt and gloves. Coffee and light refreshments will be offered. Volunteers are asked to pre-register teams of participants at www.facebook.com/culmorecleanupday or by calling the library at 703-820-8774, ext. 4, TTY 711.

Volunteers will clean up trash and other debris from Route 7 and Patrick Henry Drive to Beachway Drive/Blair Road to Columbia Pike. From Columbia Pike the crews will continue to Route 7 and back to Patrick Henry Drive. All streets between these points will be included in the cleanup.

Following the cleanup, participants will return to the Woodrow Wilson Library for lunch provided by Moe's Southwest Grill, dessert by the City Diner, water and orange juice by the Coca-Cola Company and other refreshments. The library also will host a wildlife presentation by staff from the Hidden Oaks Nature Center, information from the Coca-Cola Company, Fairfax County Health Department Division of Environmental Health, and the Bailey's Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department. There also will be special activities to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Culmore Cleanup.

The cleanup is organized by Alternative House, Bailey's Beautification Alliance, Fairfax County's Bailey's Community Center, the Fairfax County Health Department's Division of Environmental Health, Fairfax County Park Authority's Hidden Oaks Nature Center, the Mason District Supervisor's Office, the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, the Rotary Club of Bailey's Crossroads and the Woodrow Wilson Library, along with several community organizations.
