Retail water service providers who wish to continue to charge county residents higher rates than those charged by the Fairfax Water must submit a formal request to the county by Friday, March 9 to determine if those higher rates are fair and reasonable.
A detailed explanation of the review process, schedule and formal submittal requirements is available on the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Web page.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors established this review process to ensure that county residents pay fair and reasonable rates for their water. The rate review process was established to address concerns raised in the Consumer Protection Commission’s report to the board that cited discrepancies in the rates charged for water service.
The March 9 deadline allows appropriate time for a thorough review by the director of the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, public hearings and appeals, if necessary, before the ordinance’s effective date for rates of July 1, 2012.
The Retail Water Rate Review Process was prescribed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in an amendment to Chapter 65 of the County Code adopted on Dec. 6, 2011. The amendment established maximum allowable rates, fees and charges for water service in Fairfax County beginning July 1, 2012, and an exclusive service area for the Fairfax County Water Authority for any new construction or redevelopment effective December 7, 2011.
The measure includes a provision requiring retail water service providers to pass a county review to determine whether their rates are fair and reasonable if they wish to continue to charge county residents higher rates than those of the Fairfax County Water Authority.
