County Flag at Half-Staff Aug. 14 for Former Planning Commissioner Byers

By the order of Acting Fairfax County Executive Patricia Harrison, the Fairfax County flag will fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Fairfax County Government Center and the Mount Vernon Governmental Center in honor and memory of Col. John Byers. He passed away on July 29. Byers served the Mount Vernon community for more than 40 years. He was Mount Vernon's planning commissioner for 21 years, 10 of them as vice chair of the Planning Commission. He was serving on six boards, authorities or committees for Fairfax County, including the Water Authority, Human Services Council, Economic Advisory Commission, Community Revitalization and Reinvestment Advisory Group, the Barbara Baron Volunteer Award Selection Committee, and the A. Heath Onthank Award Selection Committee.
Byers served 31 years in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 4:30 p.m. at the Fort Belvoir Chapel, 5950 12th St., Fort Belvoir.
