On Saturday, July 20, 2013, Fairfax County will hold a town hall meeting to offer information about the new zoning rules and zoning application requirements for state-licensed, family child care providers.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Board Auditorium of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.

If they plan to attend, providers are requested to RSVP by July 12 by email or fax at 703-803-0116.

Attendees should include their full name, email, phone number and whether they plan to attend an afternoon workshop.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity will welcome participants and make opening remarks.

“This town hall will be a helpful opportunity for staff to initiate outreach and educate providers on the approved Zoning Ordinance Amendment,” Chairman Bulova stated. “It will help providers prepare and file special permit applications and also outline a timeline for coming into compliance.”

From 10 a.m. to noon, county staff will provide an overview on the new zoning rules,  zoning approval  process and application requirements. The meeting will break from noon to 1 p.m.

From 1 to 3 p.m., four different workshops will be offered:

  • Wake Up Your Wishes: Introduction to Wolf Trap Drama: Presented by Valerie Bayne Caroll, Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.
  • Creating Dance Experiences in the Early Childhood Classroom: Presented by Rachel Knudsen, Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.
  • Story Boxes: Looking Beyond the Book, Thinking Inside the Box: Presented by Amanda Layton, Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.
  • Up, Down and All Around: Movement With a Purpose: Presented by Kim Perks, National Educational Consulting Services.

To match state requirements, Fairfax County recently updated its zoning regulations to allow state-licensed, family child care providers to care for up to 12 children if they have a special permit or special exception.

Family child care providers may continue to care for up to seven children in a single family home or five in a townhome or apartment without zoning approval.
