Board to Dedicate Conference Center in Honor of J. Hamilton Lambert
February 26, 2014
Update: Due to inclement weather, the J. Hamilton Lambert Conference Center dedication will be postponed and rescheduled for another day. An announcement will be made once a new date has been selected.
In honor of his vision and service to Fairfax County, the Board of Supervisors will dedicate the newly named J. Hamilton Lambert Conference Center on Tuesday, March 4, at 8:30 a.m. The event, to be held in the Government Center Conference Lobby area, will recognize Lambert's contributions as county executive from 1980-1990, as well as his career as a county employee for more than three decades. The Board of Supervisors will also honor Lambert during its meeting at 9:30 a.m.
Lambert first joined the county as an assistant map draftsman and worked his way up the career ladder to become the county’s director of general services in 1973. Two years later he was named acting county executive. Following that he became deputy county executive overseeing county operations. In 1978, Lambert again took the role of acting county executive and was unanimously appointed county executive on Aug. 4, 1980.
During his time as county executive, Lambert worked with the Board of Supervisors to establish a Citizens' Commission to explore the feasibility of bringing county operations together under one roof. While much of the project can be credited to his efforts, Lambert never received the chance to work inside the building he helped to create; he left the county two years prior to the Government Center’s opening. In 1990 he founded J. Hamilton Lambert and Associates where he provided a range of customized management and consulting services to governments, businesses and individuals.
Lambert has received more than 100 awards from various organizations throughout his career, and was named "Washingtonian of the Year" by Washingtonian magazine in 1981 for his contributions to harmonious intergovernmental relations.
