Task Force to Consider a Meals Tax Referendum Presents Final Report

June 17, 2014

The Task Force to Consider a Meals Tax Referendum presented its final report to the Board of Supervisors today.  The communitywide task force was convened in April by Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and co-chaired by two former chairmen of the Board of Supervisors, Thomas M. Davis and Katherine K. Hanley.

The task force was directed to recommend to the Board of Supervisors:

  • Whether or not to proceed with a referendum for a meals tax;
  • If it is the recommendation of the group to do so, the task force should recommend the timing (what year?) for the question to be put to voters;
  • And the task force should return with a recommendation for how revenue from a meals tax should be used.

In order to assist the Board of Supervisors in making a decision about whether to put the question of levying a meals tax in Fairfax County as a referendum on the ballot, the task force developed arguments both for and against doing so.  These pros and cons are included in the report and the task force makes no recommendation on whether or not to proceed with a referendum. The Board of Supervisors accepted the task force’s report and thanked the members for their work.
