Friday, Jan. 7: Step Right Up

Power, conflict, scandal and mayhem, all set to music! The Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, "Liberal Shop of Horrors" and "Barackin' Around the Christmas Tree." They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and NPR and win new fans with every performance.   • Basic Gardening: Lush Feathery Ferns. Think ferns are limited to shady spots?   • Ponderings: Weasels. Discover just how many weasels live in Fairfax County and learn what their roles are in the food chain. Saturday, Jan. 8: Art Walk

The 2nd Saturday Art Walk at the Workhouse showcases the diverse work of more than 150 visual artists in a unique historic venue, creating an atmosphere that encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the richness of this creative community. Guests can tour seven unique studio buildings, mix and mingle with artists, buy original works of art, experience ever-changing exhibitions and meet featured artists, all while enjoying light refreshment and music. 6 to 9 p.m. Workhouse Arts Center.   • Paws to Read: Children can practice their reading skills by reading to man's (and kid's) best friend at Fairfax County Library locations. Children ages 6 to 12 can register for 15-minute sessions reading to trained therapy dogs. Free. Various times and locations.

  • Family Fun-Snow Crystals Workshop: Listen to the story of “Snowflake Bentley” and learn how snow is made. Then craft your own snowflakes of crystal, paper and pipe cleaners to take home. 2 to 3 p.m. Greenspring Gardens. $6/person. Register online or call 703-222-4664.  Sunday, Jan. 9: On the Rocks

Ice Making in 19th-Century Fairfax: Before there were refrigerators, there was ice! Learn how ice was harvested and stored on Walney Farm in the 19th century.
