Friday, Jan. 11: Green Thumbs Up!

Did you recently buy or receive a houseplant? Are you curious to know how to care for it to avoid yellowing, brown leaf tips and a leggy appearance? Saturday, Jan. 12: Laughter Is the Best Medicine

Resolved to laugh more in the New Year? You won't want to miss the Jokeslingers Comedy Tour at the Workhouse.  Featuring Alex Moore, a "comedic giant" who has appeared on "My Name is Earl," "MadTV" and "The View," Brian Kerns, from "Last Comic Standing," and Adam Dodd, a musical comic who has performed on "Ryan Seacrest Live," MTV and VH1. Flying Squirrels - Gliding in Tonight: Look for flying squirrels at roosting boxes near the nature center. Learn how you can encourage flying squirrels to visit your yard. 2nd Saturday Art Walk: Showcasing the diverse work of more than 100 visual artists in a unique historic venue, creating an atmosphere that encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the richness of this creative community. Tour seven studio buildings, mix and mingle with artists and buy original works of art, all while enjoying light refreshment and music. The perfect destination for a date night or girl's night out, as well as for art collectors and art appreciation groups. 6 to 9 p.m. Workhouse Arts Center. Free. For information call 703-584-2900.

Garden Design: Elin Haaga and Betsy Washington, George Washington landscape design instructors, present two lectures in one session: "What Kind of Garden Do You Want?" and "Garden Bones." In this double session, look at and discuss different garden styles and learn how to create the structure of the garden: paths, patios, pergolas and more. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Green Spring Gardens. $35/person. Sunday, Jan. 13: To a Tea!

Tea can be used in many different and surprising ways - from cleaning Persian rugs to feeding plants.During Tea, Glorious Tea! learn how to get the most out of your used tea bags or leftover brew with a variety of practical uses for tea. Tea With Pooh Bear and His Friends: Are heffalumps and woozles native to Fairfax County? Children and their parents will find out if these honey-stealing elephants and weasels are fact or fiction during a special tea party with Pooh Bear and his friends.  Enjoy honey, tea and cookies while learning about Virginia’s brown bears.
