Saturday, April 28: Puppetry Meets Poetry

Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs fuses puppetry and poetry, weaving favorite children’s poems into a seamless tapestry of art and entertainment for all audiences. View the natural world through a child’s eye in “Every Time I Climb a Tree!”  Imagine a symphony composed entirely by the swimming of “The Goldfish!” Thrill to the exploits of aerodynamic sausages in “Fearless Flying Hotdogs!” And dance with the “Funky Snowman!” 2 p.m. McLean Community Center's Alden Theatre.  $15/person ($10/McLean Community Center district residents.) Community Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration: Join dozens of environmental nonprofits and county agencies at this joint celebration. Activities will include free document shredding, wildlife demonstrations, a litter cleanup, a tree walk, displays by many local volunteer organizations and more.8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fairfax County Government Center. 2012 Pet Expo: Pet care professionals will discuss the benefit of vaccinations, spaying, and neutering. Demonstrations will be given on pet CPR and other emergency measures, as well as advice and tips on pet grooming and training. The event will be held on the grassy area behind the community center in the Hunters Woods Village Center. Park in the shopping area and walk around to the rear of the building. Mocktails Tasting Party: Enjoy a presentation and then learn how to mix cool, sophisticated non-alcoholic drinks that hit the spot. Organic Gardening: Join horticulturist Seth Fleming for a look into the exciting world of organic vegetable gardening. Sounds of the Night Campfire: Sounds of the night, they fill our ears with delight! Learn about animal sounds and take a nighttime stroll along the Old Oak Trail. Make May Day Baskets to fill with flowers and hang on the front door of friends or neighbors.  Learn to identify some wildflowers and make art with flowers. International Chamber Soloists: The International Chamber Soloists is a unique group of extraordinary young string players from all over the world. Member musicians come from Russia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Latvia, Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and the United States. They are brought together by the group’s founder and music director, prominent violinist Dmitri Berlinsky. This performance will feature works by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. 2 p.m. Reston Community Center's CenterStage.  $30/person. ($15/Reston Community Center district residents.)
