Saturday, September 3: Let's Get Jurassic!

Children ages 3 to 9 with an accompanying adult can enjoy puppet shows and activities featuring the biggest animals that ever walked the earth, at the "Dinosaur Extravaganza Puppet Show." Walk with a naturalist to find hidden clues along the trail from the Jurassic Era. 2 to 3 p.m. Hidden Oaks Nature Center. $5/child. Register online. For information call 703-941-1065.

Block Party at the Workhouse - Celebrating Lorton!: A variety of fun, free and family friendly activities, including the Studio Artists Sidewalk Sale, "Taste of Lorton" food and drinks, a neighborhood talent show, music, art, fun and games. 2 to 7 p.m. Workhouse Arts Center. Farmers Markets: The vibrant colors of freshly picked fruits and vegetables contrast with the fragrant perfume of cut flowers. Across the market floats the aroma of freshly baked breads and pastries while one savors a sample of creamy artisan cheese. The Fairfax County Park Authority's Farmers Markets are a great place to find a wide variety of freshly picked fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, fresh eggs, baked goods, honey and cider. Milk and cheese products, along with a wide array of meat products, round out the edible delights. The Burke and Reston farmers markets are open from 8 a.m. to noon.  A full schedule of markets, at 12 sites throughout the county, is available online.

Sunday, September 4: I'm On a Boat!

Cruise around and enjoy the views on one-hour  Occoquan River Tour Boat Rides. The ride begins at Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton and travels three miles down river to the Belmont Bay Marina before heading back. See the amazing views and catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife that calls the area home. 1 to 8 p.m. (Call 703-690-2121 for scheduled hours and information.) $10/adults; $5/children 12 and under; free/under 4. Occoquan Regional Park.

Tagging Monarch Butterflies: Learn to identify monarch butterflies, discover their fascinating life cycle and how to attract them to your yard. Assist with tagging and releasing monarchs which are en route to Mexico. Visit a monarch waystation garden and be tasted by a butterfly. 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. and 3 to 4:15 p.m. Hidden Oaks Nature Center. $6/person. Register online. For information call 703-941-1065.
