Friday, Dec. 10:  A Ghostly Tale

Mount Vernon High School Drama performs Charles Dicken's classic "A Christmas Carol."  Through a journey of epic proportions, Ebenezer Scrooge discovers the true meaning of Christmas, hope, charity and family. 7 p.m. (Also Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.) Mount Vernon High School. $10/person.   • Parents' Night Out.  Enjoy a night of dinner, dancing or shopping this holiday season while your children have a great time in a fun and safe environment. Activities for the children include a movie, games, arts and crafts and dinner. Children ages 5-12 (must be in school) are welcome to participate at no cost. 5:30 to 9 p.m. Gum Springs Community Center. Pre-registration is required. Call 703-360-6088 (TTY 711).



Saturday, Dec. 11: A Passel O' Puppets

Looking for holiday events for the whole family? Look no further than Fairfax County's libraries. Puppet shows galore, holiday open houses and book sales are just some of the fun you'll find at local library branches throughout the day and the season. Check out the full schedule for details.

  • Looking to de-clutter this holiday season? The Safe & Secure Community Shred Event  might be just the ticket. Residents may recycle up to five boxes of paper documents at this shred event, taking place on the Northern Virginia Community College Annandale Campus. 8 to 11 a.m. Free. Call 703-324-5230.

  • Sky-Watching during the Perseid meteor shower. Learn basic information about the night sky, including its planets, moons and constellations. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and bug spray. 7 to 8 p.m. $4/person. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.Cub Run RECenter.  Register online or call 703-222-4664.  Sunday, Dec. 12: Tea by Candlelight

Enjoy tea by candlelight and stories of Christmas past during a Winter Candlelight Tea. Traditional music, decorations and teatime treats will take you back to the early days of Historic Greenspring. $27/adults, includes a traditional English tea. $18/ages 12 and under. The McLean Symphony Orchestra performs seasonal selections for chorus and orchestra, including Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" and Bavel's "Hanukkah Rhapsody" as well as the orchestra's annual sing-along.
