 Friday, Dec. 20: Spirit of the Season

Christmas Concert – O Holy Night: Hear talented soloists and a chorus perform beautiful music to celebrate Christmas and honor the meaning for the season. Campfire Friday – Hibernators: Join naturalists for outdoor adventures and nature studies about the slumbering wildlife in the Pohick Stream Valley. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hidden Pond Nature Center.  Saturday, Dec. 21: Illuminating Tour

Victorian Candlelight Tour: Enjoy traditions of the Victorian era as you meet Sully's Santa, hear a reading of “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” and see the Christmas tree decorated according to an 1885 memory. Make a tree decoration based on a Victorian original. Forty-five minute house tours start every 15 minutes from 4:45 to 7 p.m. at Sully Historic Site. Holiday Cardmaking Workshop: Join paper craft expert Keisha Powell to learn how to make professional looking holiday cards from scratch. Materials will be provided. From 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at Richard Byrd Library. Ages 13 and up. Free. Register online. For information call 703-451-8055.

Holiday Model Train Display: Watch G-gauge trains wend their way through a miniature Western town in the barn. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Colvin Run Mill Historic Site. Also on Sunday. Admission is free. For information call 703-759-2771.

Owl Outing: These nocturnal raptors are pair-bonding and looking for nesting sites this time of year. Prowl the park after dark to listen for and learn about local owls and possibly see a barred owl. Meet at the visitor center and dress for the weather and off-trail travel. From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Huntley Meadows Park. Ages 18 and up. $6/person. Register online. Ballroom Social Dance: Put on your dancing shoes and join the monthly Ballroom Social Dance featuring complimentary refreshments and a cash bar. All skill levels welcome! Arrive early for a 30-minute mini-lesson on the waltz from 7:30 to 8 p.m. The social dance is led by a professional ballroom instructor from 8 to 10:30 p.m. in the McGuire-Woods Gallery (second floor of W-16), Workhouse Arts Center. $10/person (Ballroom Social) and $5/person (mini-lesson).  Sunday, Dec. 22: A Little Bird Told Me

Celebrate Urban Birds: Start a lifelong hobby to enjoy the fun of watching backyard birds. Learn how to identify common species and attract songbirds to your yard. Handouts will help you continue bird watching at home and making your yard or balcony a wildlife habitat. From 2 to 3 p.m. at Hidden Oaks Nature Center. $6/person. Register online.
