3 Tips for Your Garden

It’s spring and for homeowners, that means it’s time to ramp up care for your lawns, flowers, trees and vegetable gardens.

Earlier this week, two of our county master gardeners answered questions about gardening during an Ask Fairfax! online chat. Master gardeners John Meenan and Sunny Greene helped homeowners become better, more responsible gardeners.

They offered many tips, including these three:

1  Summer harvest vegetables like tomatoes, beans, squash, etc., should not be planted until soil temperatures rise, usually around May 1.

2 Always to do a soil test before applying fertilizer or lime to your lawn.

3 Rain barrels are a great way to water your garden plants, including vegetable.
