Trench Warfare: Training for the Next Collapse

For many long hours last summer a man was trapped in dirt up to his chest when a trench he was working in collapsed around him. He was successfully rescued by the Fire and Rescue Department, but a quick search on Google News shows how common and dangerous trench collapses are across the county.  To be prepared for the next trench accident, several of the Fire and Rescue Department’s Technical Rescue staff participated in a rigorous training this week in Lorton. As shown in the photo, trench boxes were swiftly secured in place to make sure additional dirt and debris did not collapse on a simulated victim.
