  • Fairfax County Park Authority Trails
  • Fairfax Trails and Streams - Working to protect, restore and enhance the environmental, historical, educational and trail resources of our stream valleys. Includes maps and info on the Difficult Run, Pimmit Run, Accotink Creek, and Cross-County trails. www.fairfaxTrails.org
  • Friends of the W&OD Trail - A non-profit citizens organization dedicated to the preservation, enhancement and promotion of the W&OD trail
  • The National Center for Bicycling and Walking - The electronic information center for bicycle and pedestrian advocacy and policy. www.bikefed.org
  • Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority Trails Site
  • One Less Car - A member-supported citizen's group working to make bicycling and walking viable and safe modes of transportation. www.onelesscar.org
  • Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Research Page - From the Federal Highway Administration program to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. Includes info on the Bicycle Compatibility Index.
  • Potomac Appalachian Trail Club - The main purpose of the PATC involves upkeep and improvement of 970 miles of hiking trails, 30 shelters, and 28 cabins in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. www.patc.net
  • Potomac Trail Council - The Potomac Trail Council (PTC) is an alliance of community organizations and local agencies committed to the development, protection, interpretation and celebration of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST). www.potomactrail.org

  • State Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinators
  • Surface Transportation Policy Project - Emphasizes the needs of people, rather than vehicles, in assuring access to jobs, services, and recreational opportunities. www.transact.org
  • Trails and Greenways Clearinghouse - Provides technical assistance, information resources and referrals to trail and greenway advocates and developers across the nation. www.trailsandgreenways.org
  • Transportation Advisory Commission - a citizens advisory group that provides information to the Board of Supervisors on major transportation issues and recommendations.

  • America Walks - A non-profit national coalition of local advocacy groups dedicated to promoting walkable communities. americawalks.org
  • Perils for Pedestrians - A monthly television series promoting awareness of issues affecting the safety of people who walk. www.pedestrians.org

Bicycling

  • Virginia Bicycling Federation - A state-wide organization devoted to biking. vabike.org
  • Washington Area Bicyclist Association - WABA is completely devoted to improving bicycling conditions and increasing bicycle use. www.waba.org
  • WABA's Bicycle Commuter Assistance Program - The Bicycle Commuter Assistance Program is an interactive bicycle commuter guide that provides detailed commuter information and maps online. Use it to find the most convenient routes to your destination in the Washington area.

Equestrian
